The Rural Voice, 1999-04, Page 37Steve poison and Karen Braithwaite say production has increased since they mored into the new barn. curiousity in the dairy industry with farmers from as far as New York coming to see how it works. One of the first questions usually asked is about the cold weather. Even in minus -20 degree weather, Steve says, the temperature inside stayed at 5-7 degrees in the barn and there was no problem with freezing. "Once the cows were in the barn we didn't notice any differences than in the other barn," Karen says. The milking parlour features in - floor heating and a false ceiling makes it feel like a parlour in any modern barn. That ceiling is reinforced with I -beams so that it provides a storage loft for hay and straw for the box stalls. One of the new features of this shelter is the use of ventilation chimneys along the roof -ridge. "We're kind of guinea pigs." Karen says after they chose the chimneys over ridge ventilation. They wanted more moisture control than the openings of ridge ventilation would afford, noting that snow and driving rain could wet a wide area of the floor under the larger openings but so far the chimneys have limited moisture. "1t seems to be working really well," Karen says. The new barn has 70 stalls and the Dolsons currently milk 66 cows, milking in a double -six parlour.
