the first questions usually asked is
about the cold weather. Even in
minus -20 degree weather, Steve says,
the temperature inside stayed at 5-7
degrees in the barn and there was no
problem with freezing.
"Once the cows were in the barn
we didn't notice any differences than
in the other barn," Karen says.
The milking parlour features in -
floor heating and a false
ceiling makes it feel like a
parlour in any modern barn. That
ceiling is reinforced with I -beams so
that it provides a storage loft for hay
and straw for the box stalls.
One of the new features of this
shelter is the use of ventilation
chimneys along the roof -ridge.
"We're kind of guinea pigs."
Karen says after they chose the
chimneys over ridge ventilation.
They wanted more moisture control
than the openings of ridge ventilation
would afford, noting that snow and
driving rain could wet a wide area of
the floor under the larger openings
but so far the chimneys have limited
moisture.
"1t seems to be working really
well," Karen says.
The new barn has 70 stalls and the
Dolsons currently milk 66 cows,
milking in a double -six parlour. They
