here are some additional ideas.
Use reduced rate and even half -
rate applications of post -emergence
herbicides in soybeans. I cannot
find published Ontario work that
supports this, but I would refer you to
the Soybean Fact Sheet entitled
Using Reduced Rates of
Postemergence Herbicides in
Soybeans for a list of herbicides, the
weeds they control at half -rates and
specific recommendations prior to
reducing herbicide rates. This fact
sheet is available from the Michigan
Soybean Promotion Committee,
phone 517-652-3294. The Michigan
Soybean Association takes its grower
check -off dollars and applies them to
producer -funded research every year.
The Michigan Corn Association
under the Corn Marketing Program
of Michigan, used its producer
check -off dollars in 1998 to fund
research on the reduced rates of Dual
II Magnum, Prowl, Harness and
Roundup — another example of
producer -funded research in action.
All this Michigan State University
research demonstrated that many
broadleaf weed species can be
controlled using half -rate
applications of post -emergence
herbicides. The half -rates were
applied in a split application with
one-quarter applied at early post to
weeds that were less than one inch
tall and one-quarter applied two
weeks later when the weeds were less
than one inch tall. This research work
is on-going with producer funding.
Catching the weeds when they are
very small is the key to success with
this strategy as small weeds are
easier to control. You need to scout
fields and identify weeds when they
are small, select the optimal
herbicides fo. those weeds and keep
adjuvants, seed oils and surfactants at
full rates. MSU recommends not
reducing herbicides rates when the
weeds are under moisture stress.
Using lower application rates than
recommended on the label is legal,
but it excludes the user from the right
to make claims of poor performance
to the manufacturer.
