The Rural Voice, 1999-02, Page 47RAINY RIVER .,1! Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER R.R. 1, Devlin, Ontario POW 1C0 807-486-3622 • The Rural Voice is provided to Rainy RAINY RIVER VALLEY River Federation members by the RRFA Federation seeks solution to hydro interruptions January 7, 1999• A fresh new year and we're one week ahead of deadline; what a great start! It's cold here, really cold and we do have the snow, but once again very lucky as per usual in the District; we're not snowbound or suffering from the climatic changes. Now if the power outages could be corrected, we'd have it made. Attending the RRFA meeting at OMAFRA were: President, Linda Armstrong; Secretary, Dianne Vandenbrand; Vice -President, Kristine Carpenter; Shirley Morrish, KimJo Calder, Archie Wiersema, Rudy Sinninghe, Wade Desserre, Bill Darby and Gordon Cornell. Gordon and Bill presented a letter about the hydro situation and outages that occurred over Christmas. A number of repairs had to be made on local farms and during holidays parts are not easy to come by. Gordon has the support of the RRFA to take the letter, in person, to Mr. Doug McCaig and explain clearly what the six -to - eight -hour outages can do to endanger livestock, businesses and residents. Gordon is hoping to suggest a solution. Kristine reported for OAFE (Ag in the Classroom). We received a packet of dairy information to pass along to classrooms and we will be in the schools on February 19 for a Teachers' Day. It is hoped that most of the teachers, if not all, can make use of the wonderful kits and information that our committee has available. For information, contact Kristine, Pat Clysdale-Cornell or Shirley Morrish. Wade reported for Community Pasture. He said there's lots of snow there and that there wouldn't be anyone attending the annual on January 19. He also mentioned that a new manager would be hired. KimJo reminded everyone of the annual Cattlemen's meeting on Wednesday, January 20. It will be at 7:00 p.m. at Stratton, and always the coldest night of the year. Linda stated that the President's meeting is February 16 in Toronto and the Board meeting is the next day. She would like someone else to go along with her so that our RRFA can benefit from the entire two days. Linda Armstrong, Tom Morrish, Rudy Sinninghe and Wade Desserre met with MP Robert Nault, in December, at a constituency meeting in Rainy River. From the sound of their reports, Nault was in a corner with all his answers ready. He's not familiar with the agricultural sector; it's up to all of us in this District to keep reminding him. • Did you remember that the postage has gone up to 49 cents a letter anywhere in Canada — that's 46 cents plus GST. The town of Emo will be starting off their IOOth birthday year with a giant bonfire and skating party on Friday, January 8. It goes from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and you're to bring your used Christmas tree for the fire. It will be outdoors, weather permitting. Hot chocolate and donuts will be provided. Mark your calendars for the big barn dance, September 10, 1999. Emo is one of our biggest Agricultural supporters and central to our farming area. Condolences go out to the family and friends of George and Bev Hyatt with the passing of Marlene Gouliquer. Marlene was everyone's friend. She was one of the pioneers of farm women working long hours to get the field work done. Marlene worked many years behind the desk at the Stratton salesyards and everyone will remember the warm person that she was, always with concern for her fellow workers. We'I not forget that joyful laugh, her appetizing meals, her famous salt and pepper collection, and the beautiful red hair. "Some people come into our lives and quickly go, some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same". It is hoped that new, potential leaders will attend and lel their names stand for the executive positions. "You will never find time for anything: if you want time, you must make it." The annual 4-H Banquet and Awards night is February 5 at the Emo Arena, upstairs. The "Go for the Gold" teams will give a presentation and there will be short entertainment from the Social Recreation 4-H Club. Sign up for the Stock -dog Training course coming up soon.
