Jim Ingratta
You may order your car on the
Internet in five year's time.
Prairie farms exceeding $50,000 in
gross annual sales, Fulton said half
have a computer. Out of those, about
65 per cent are on-line. Studies have
shown that 12,000 are trading on the
internet, leaving considerable room
for growth.
Jt is that potential market for both
buyers and sellers that companies
such as IBM, the George Morris
Centre, advertising corporations and
farm product suppliers are gearing
research dollars and investment.
Vincent Amanor-Boadu, a
research associate with George
Morris said there is an opportunity to
seize as the number of people
connected increases rapidly. While
the North American on-line market
has grown by 90 per cent over the
last year, Latin American has jumped
by 152 per cent. In Canada those
numbers have increased from 8.9
million to 12 million.
That connectedness has become
the great equalizer. It allows the same
access to the consumer base for a
small company as a large one. There
is no distinguishing of size on the
internet. "The world is now your
market," he said.
This will give Canadian
agriculture the opportunity to become
what Germany ,is to cars, said
Amanor-Boadu. Producers and
companies must go beyond
informing, but build a brand loyalty
for their product by differentiating it
