The organization lobbies Ag
Canada for increased access to
better pesticide products
already available in the United States
while keeping the MPs and
government officials informed on
various ag issues.
With a mandate to look at
environmental concerns, Fischer says
AGCare deals with water quality
issues and was involved in the
creation of environmental farm plans
in 1991.
"EFPs are geared to the
producer," he says. "It is for self-
evaluation, to see what is good and
what can be improved. There can
always be improvements."
"Sometimes, there
were too many
sacrifices made."
On the home front, Fischer, in
equal partnership with Donna, runs a
70 -head dairy operation, or as he puts
it, 8,000 eight -ounce glasses of milk
per day.
"There are often times when
Donna does more work than I do," he
admits, particularly when he travels
to Guelph for lectures or attends
seminars for the many other
organizations of which he is a part.
The family crops 200 acres near
Walkerton and owns a 400 -acre
woodlot in the Sundridge area. "We
manage the woodlot as a crop," he
says, though a cabin nestled in the
bush is used as a family retreat.
When his two children were
growing up, Fischer says he was very
busy continuing his studies and
advancing his career. It was only
when they entered their teen years
that the family realized how much
time they had missed.
"Sometimes, there were too many
sacrifices made."
They now make a point of getting
together regularly as a family, though
it is more difficult with his daughter
in her first year of university. He and
his son make special trips to the
cabin for weekends away, just for
father -and -son times.0
