The Rural Voice, 1998-12, Page 31position of guest lecturer at the university between October 5 and 9. "It is our duty and our responsibility to be involved," said Fischer, emphasizing he is in the business to be a farm leader. Over his many years in agriculture, that motto has translated into participation in several organizations, which, along with his personal studies in microbiology and agriculture, make it appropriate that he was selected by the university to serve as agrologist-in- residence. "1 was very honoured to be asked," he said. Though somewhat humble in accepting the role, Fischer says the appointment is based on academics, professional experience and membership in agricultural organizations. He feels particularly honoured as the first food producer named to the position. Others have included animal rights activists, environmental consultants, non-food- busincss managers as well as those in pharmaceuticals, seed and finance. Fischer presented 18 lectures or workshops with the focus on "It is our duty and our responsibility to be involved." agriculture, the environment and the new millennium, promoting safe, nutritious food for society. "It was seen as a credible message from a credible voice," he says. Though one might think that a man with an extensive agricultural background would speak strictly to agricultural students at the university, Fischer also spoke to non-ag students, saying he was surprised at not being asked what he expected but getting more non -issue questions about the industry. "I learned while they did." Of his many lectures, biotechnology and genetically - engineered food was one of the most sought-after. The topics ranged from the patenting of higher life -forms to cloning and asking just who is in control? Whcn the talk turned to food labeling, particularly with biotech foods, Fischer says some listeners leaned towards labeling everything.
