24 THE RURAL VOICE
the bottom of thc box was one of Mr.
Big -Spender's books of tickets —
inadvertently still in book form.
Howls of "Shame" and
"Incompetence" reverberated off thc
walls.
Now all attention turncd to the
selection of gifts. The first -place
winner refused to pick his prize from
thc published list until his wife had
been consulted – in person. Shc
could not make thc half-hour trip
from the city to thc school until mid-
afternoon, !caving subsequent
winners in limbo until the first prize
was claimed. The mood was now
ugly.
As we trudged off to teach our
afternoon classes, insults flew,

his prize.
As the day dawned crisp and
clear, we returned for Day 2
of the Christmas Draw. The
original rules had been that a winner
had only two hours to pick their prize
before it passed to thc next name on
the list. But frenzied by the lure of
bran muffins, homemade jam (the top
prizes having been snapped up), our
vice-principal, a former football
coach, and potential "Let's Make a
Deal" moderator, implemented new
strategies to speed up the process.
His prize was also in striking range.
Now, at any given hour of the
teaching day, those in the batter's
box might expect a knock on their
classroom door. Outside, the vice-
principal issued the teacher marching
orders to go down to claim their prize
while the big guy covered their
