The Rural Voice, 1998-12, Page 27Christmas Draw. Teachers chatted to
custodians, secretaries conversed
with cafeteria staff, even the
Principal spent more time in the
school. The Christmas Draw
RULED!
Tickets were sold, singly or in
books of 10. Sales were brisk, and as
the day of The Draw loomed, a mad
flurry of money and tickets changed
hands. The number of tickets drawn
from the box would correspond to the
number of prizes donated. Obviously
the more prizes given, the more
people won.
Over $500 worth of tickets had
been sold by Draw Day. The frenzied
mood of the school's students as
Christmas'Vacation drew nigh was
only surpassed by the adults
supervising around them.
On the anticipated day, at high
noon, the box of tickets was opened,
and a hush fell over the assembled
throng. It was standing room only in
the teacher's staff room.
Jt is fascinating spectator sport to
watch otherwise intelligent,
educated professionals mutate
into crazed mercenaries when
winning is at stake.
The melee began when one
teacher won two of the first five
tickets drawn out of the box. Calls of
"fraud" and "cheat" resounded in our
halls of learning. As names continued
to be chosen over the course of the
next half hour, shouts of joy erupted
from those blessed, cries of anguish
were heard from the less fortunate.
The last name was finally pulled,
but one teacher, distraught at winning
nothing, (having ventured $3 for
tickets) was less than satisfied.
"My tickets probably weren't
even put in" she bellowed, and
commenced ransacking the
remaining contents of the box. She
remained unconvinced until her three
non -winning tickets were unearthed.
Another teacher, more free -
spending, and less terrier -like, had
purchased three books of ten tickets
each. But by the end of the draw he
had heard his name called only once.
He blamed only bad luck for his lack
of booty, but sniffing another rat,
Mrs. Box -Razor began another full-
scale audit of the prize box. She
found pay -dirt this time. Lurking on
