The Rural Voice, 1998-11, Page 29something positive to address odour
problems, as opposed to adding
chemicals to the manure.
With the ministry's guidelines on
how far a tank must be from a
neighbour, Kaines said a cover
allows a medium-sized operation to
put a tank closer to a neighbour and
still meet the ministry's regulations.
Another benefit of the dome is the
expected increase in nutrient levels in
the manure, specifically nitrogen.
Ontario Pork is also excited about
the Geo Air -Dome. "If I was a hog
producer, I would be looking into it,"
said Sam Bradshaw, environmental
communications specialist with
Ontario Pork.
Bradshaw said covers have the
potential to eliminate odours. "It is
not mandatory for farmers to have
covers on their tanks if the tank is far
enough away from neighbours,"
Bradshaw said. "Economics will
dictate whether a farmer wants a
cover. If the farmer feels he is losing
too much storage space due to rain
water in the tank or if he thinks he
can save money on pumping costs
he'll think about getting a cover."0
