30 THE RURAL VOICE
would have died anyway but the
woodlot owncr didn't reap any
benefit if they died naturally
Where once commercial thinning
didn't take place until trees were
almost 70 years old today there are
markets for trees that arc as small as
40 years old.
To protect the value of the
remaining crop trees during a cutting
operation, pick a good logger and
schedule the cut for the time of the
year when the least damage will be
done. Ask around for the name of a
reputable logger, Millar said. You
can talk to a good logger and tell
them you are concerned about the
trees left standing and they will take
time and care to protect them as
much as possible during cutting and
skidding operations.
March through June is the
time of the year when the
most damage will be done
during a logging operation because
the sap is running and the bark is
slipping. June and July are the next
most likely time to create damage. If
work can be held off until November
to February when sap level is low,
the least damage is likely to be done.
If damage does occur, wounds up
to 100 square inches will likely heal
within 10 years and aren't a serious
concern, Millar said. Larger wounds
can create rot and disease the reduce
the value of a potential top grade
tree.
During a panel discussion on
selling timber, most of the speakers
pointed to the importance of
vigilance and common sense by the
woodlot owner in preventing damage
and properly managing the long-term
value of the woodlot.
Bruce Kropf of B. Kropf Forestry
Service Ltd. said the quality of work
a lumber crew does will depend on
the priorities of a landowner. "Does
he want (the most) money or does he
want to have a good bush in 10
years? If the guy just wants money to
buy a new tractor, then the bush will
be cut that way."
Landowner Victor Rowland,
president of the Huron -Perth
Woodlot Association, said one of his
frustrations was how to get the
message out to production farmers
that their bush is a valuable part of
their farm operation, not just a source
of quick cash.°
