The Rural Voice, 1998-09, Page 51machinery at Huron's IPM. Claus
Breede, Huron County Museum
director and the staff of the museum
have designed the county exhibits.
The exhibits will be housed in an
area close to 4,000 square feet and
will depict the essence of Huron
County by looking at farming, rural
life and various other aspects of the
county.
The other attraction the museum is
organizing in conjunction with the
County Exhibits committee is the
avenue of flags. Breede hopes to see
all 27 municipalities in the county
represented with a flag. The problem
they are running into, said Brecde, is
that about half of the municipalities
don't have flags. Breede is hoping all
will have flags made for the event.
The 15th annual quilt show will
also be held next summer at the
museum in conjunction with the
County Exhibits at the IPM.
Another important factor in
organizing for next year's IPM is
getting the word out. Cindy Fisher is
with the Huron County Planning
Department and is in charge of
publicity.
A special brochure and video have
been produced to publicize the
match. These will be available to
visitors of this year's match in
Kingston. The video is 12 minutes
long, nine minutes are dedicated to
the county and the other three to the
IPM.
"The county's main involvement
in the IPM is in the county exhibits,
publicity and accommodations
because of our role in tourism and
promotion," said Fisher.
Next year the county will put out a
special edition of their Huron County
travel guide dedicated to the IPM.
In terms of publicity Graeme
Craig is excited about the IPM web
site set up by Jim Prior of Brussels.
The site has had over 2,000 hits so
far and is updated regularly with new
pictures and information.
For those who plan ahead, the
plowing match committee has
scheduled early bird draws for pre -
purchasers. Offered for the first time
at the IPM, is the opportunity to pre-
purchase tickets for the event. Five-
day, $50 packages can be purchased
until August 1, 1999.
With the Huron IPM only a year
away it is evident the match will
mean a lot to the county. Not only
will it be fun for residents of Huron
County it will bring millions of
dollars to the county in consumer
spending and trade. But it won't just
be the business in the county that will
reap the benefits of the show. All of
the profits made from the show will
be turned back into the community.
Craig said they haven't decided yet
where the money will go, but they do
know it will stay local.
"It's a team effort from all aspects
of Huron County," Craig said.
There's one good reason to come out
and support it.

Plow the old
fashioned way
If you have a tractor over 40
years old, why not get it out and
plow the old fashioned way in
preparation for next year's IPM
in Huron County?
If you've got a good eye and
an old tractor you could win
enough points to take part in the
Antique Plowing Competition
when the International Plowing
Match comes to Huron County in
September 1999.
Competitors in the antique
plowing class at this year's Huron
County Plowing Day on August
21, were working to gain enough
points to move on to the
international competition in 1999.
Allan Walper, chair of the
IPM antique plowing committee,
said in order to be eligible to take
part in the international match
you must have accumulated 100
points. He said a good place to
start is at matches like the one
held in Huron this August.
"You can plow at the county
match to get those points, and
you can get them all in one day,"
Walper said.0
