Bill to proclaim Ontario Agricu:ture Week
Perth MPP, Bert Johnson tabled in
the Legislative Assembly of Ontario,
on June 9, 1998, an Act to designate
an annual week of recognition for
Ontario's farmers.
"Ontario's agricultural industry
has traditionally been the backbone
of our province and our economy,"
said Mr. Johnson. "This week
provides the people of Ontario the
opportunity to gratefully
acknowledge farmers and farm
families for their contributions to the
quality of life of all our citizens."
The bill proclaims the week
commencing on the Monday
immediately before Thanksgiving
Day in each year as Ontario
Agriculture Week.
"This bill reflects the valuable
contribution to the province and its
cconomy by the farmers of Ontario
and the agricultural industry," said
Ed Segsworth, President of the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture.
"One of my primary goals is gaining
recognition of the importance of our
Ontario farm families and farm
communities. I thank Bert Johnson
for tabling this Bill and the
government members for
demonstrating their support."

important role farmers in Ontario

Federation of Ontario. "It will
provide an opportunity for all
Ontarians to share in the celebration
of Agriculture and everything it

"The Francophone Farmers
support this Bill strongly and are
pleased that it recognizes both
Ontario's farming history, which
began with the French settlers in Ste.
Marie, and the important role that
agriculture plays in the province,"
said Pierre Glaude of L'Union des
Cultivateurs Franco Ontariens. "This
recognition for the farmers in Ontario
is important for the agricultural
industry."
Perth County Federation of
Agriculture President Andy DeVries
commented "Thanksgiving Day has
been with us for many years. Adding
Ontario Agriculture Week will
remind us all the more, the
importance of agriculture in Ontario,
Canada and around the world."
Ontario's agri-food industry is a
world leader and contributes some
$25 billion every year to the
provincial economy. This sector is a
key factor in positioning Ontario as
one of the best places in North
America to live, work and raise a
family.
"Throughout the year the hard
work, dedication and expertise of
farm families in Ontario ensures that
fresh quality food and other
agricultural products are available to
everyone in the province," said Mr.
Johnson. "I feel that the Ontario
Farmer is one of the truly great
heroes of our province and as such
deserves the recognition that this
week provides."
