The Rural Voice, 1998-04, Page 61Gardening
featured in Canadian Living
magazine last spring. They have
over 1,000 plants in their collection
and continue to breed tree peonies
to develop new varieties that feature
vivid colours and strong stems.
They arc members of the Oakville
Horticulture Society which is
sponsoring the formation of the
Canadian Peony Society. The aim of
the society is to promote the grow-
ing, improving and use of peonies in
more home gardens. This new group
wants to locate and record locally
brcd peonies and produce a national
registry of collections and their
location. They are also hoping to be
able to order peonies for members
and communities from around the
world. There will be annual peony
shows and possibly regional shows.
The new Sondra Comets Peony
Garden at the Royal Botanical
Gardens has sparked further interest
in peonies and the RBG has offered
space for meetings and shows and
access to the collections under staff
guidance. It all sounds very exciting
for anyone involved with peonies or
for anyone wanting to get more
involved. There will be a show at
RBG June 14, 1998 as well as a
three level competition. A visit to
the show will also get you to the
RBG in time to see the Iris show at
the same time and place.
As with any group, whether new
or well established, there is always a
need for people to get involved.
Membership fee is only five dollars
and there are a variety of ways to
get in touch with the Canadian
Peony Society: Canadian Peony
