February will be a busy month
January 12, 1998
Happy New Year! Just think of the
possibilities with all the resolutions
that one can make. It could mean a
whole new world out there. I charge
into January with a long list of good
intentions and as the month rolls by
all too quickly, so do the plans that
were so carefully set out. So as soon
as this page is written I must finish
the Christmas cards and seasonal
greetings before spring arrives.
There is a new date set for the
January RRFA meeting. New
president Kim Dessere suggested the
last Wednesday of the month, so next
month's page won't be just "off the
cuff'.
This month will be a very busy
one with winter meetings and some
cattlemen already sitting up nights
with their cows. Some of us prefer to
wait until March and April; then
again, some wait until July, so the
District has become open to all
seasons keeping everyone consistent
and in harmony with their own needs.
Congratulations to John and
Marina Gerber on 25 years of
friendly and dedicated service to their
customers at Emo Feed Service in
Emo. It's a great meeting place on a
Saturday morning — everyone's
rushing in to get their weekly
supplies before closing time after
1:00 p.m. It really is a "one stop farm
shop".
Rainy River Cattlemen will hold
their annual meeting at 7:30 p.m.,
January 21 at Stratton Separate
School.
To date three people have
registered for the "Calving Clinic for
Women", which will be held January
22 at OMAFRA. We need at least 10.
The three who have registered are
"old cowgirls", so come on ladies,
you can never stop learning, even
when you think you know all the
answers.
The annual 4-H Leaders'
Association supper and meeting is at
the golf course on January 23. Deb
and Lucy will cater the meal at 7:00
p.m.
Remember that the tattoo letter for
calves this year is "H".
Bell Canada has announced major
service improvements along with an
increase of $2.57 per month for
residential customers. The amount
varies with your location. By 1999,
they've promised an elimination of
long distance calling charges to a
number of exchanges. Single -line
service is also being offered and 911
emergency service. They will also be
upgrading older facilities in the Far
North. It's all very wonderful, but
comes with a price.
Don't miss the fun at the Little
Amik Winter Carnival, February 5 - 8
in Fort Frances and "Ice -box Days"
in International Falls, January 15 -
18.
The Annual 4-1-1 Awards Banquet
will take place, Friday, February 6 at
the Devlin Community Centre. Call
KimJo Calder for your tickets before
January 30.
The Rainy River Valley
Agricultural Society held their annual
meeting in December and the new
board of Directors are: President; Ken
McKinnon; First Vice -President, Ed
Gellately; Second Vice -President,
Allan Teeple; Secretary -Treasurer,
Dianna Gamsby. The Directors are
Betty Wilson, Betty Zimmerman,
Ben Blattner, Shirley Teeple, Cindy
Judson, Morris Judson, Keith Caul,
Dorothy Bonot, Doug Hodge, Bill
James, Tanya Smith, Gary Beck,
Irene Ploegman, Kelly Faraghcr and
Frank Szeder. For any information on
Fair activities, call Dianna at 807-
483-5435.
Rainy River District Farm
Management Association held their
annual meeting with elections. New
president is Amos Brielman, Vice -
President is Bill Darby, Treasurer is
Kim Cornell and Secretary is Kristine
Carpenter.
The Association is supporting the
local 4-H Association with new ideas
on business practises; Bill Darby will
give a presentation at the 4-H Awards
Banquet to clarify what the
association has to offer. The group
will also set up a committee to assist
with Ag Days possibly April 3 - 4 at
Barwick. All commodity groups in
the District will be approached to
have a role in the day's planning.
Last year was a huge success and this
ycar promises to be even better.
Ag Days is a team effort with the
Rainy River District Soil & Crop
Association.
"Spotlight" Mattell announced that
Barbie, launched 38 years ago, will
have a thicker waist. She will still
remain youthful looking and not
really show her we age. Just thought
you might be interested!
Our compassion goes out to our
Eastern Ontario communities who are
suffering with the freezing weather
and hydro problems. A day or two is
not bad, as we have endured, but
when it extends into two weeks, it's
not fun anymore. Are we ever really
prepared for what the weather has to
offer?
Happy Groundhog Day to
everyone!

fears, and as young as your hopes and
dreams."0
