Changing plant and cropping

match the material to the species.
New technology usually has been
the driving force leading to advances
in my profession, and it will be more
than ever in the future. But in 1988,
when new herbicides, insecticides,
fungicides, plant growth regulators,
or even seed varieties came on the
market, there was generally plenty of
data to support the discussion on
whether or not to try them.
By contrast, in 1997 much of the
new technology was getting its first
extensive trials in growers' fields.
That's due partially to the nature of
the technology — but it's also
because we live in an era of instant
gratification. Simply put, people
don't want to wait.
That same attitude seems to
dominate a corporate world where
focus is often on short-term profits,
and marketing departments often
dominate the research and
development departments. Products
are often sold based on their
immediate marketability rather than
on a true need or fit, and growers
literally are bombarded with choices
that are both complicated and
expensive and sometimes less -than -
perfect.
