The Rural Voice, 1998-02, Page 27Risk comes into play if a shipment
of supposedly non -genetically
modified beans is found to be
contaminated.
Fowler said the advantage of
working with Canadian growers is
that the "risk quotient" is less.
DNA tests of any soybean product
can determine if the original
soybeans used to make the product
were genetically modified.
Fowler pointcd to the Sealuck V,
the ship which carried the 18,000
tons of soybeans to Europe, and said
one bucket of genetically -altered
beans could spoil the entire shipment.
To protect against that rise of
contamination, European buyers are
demanding "paper trail".
From producer, to broker, to
manufacturer, the buyer wants to be
able to prove the beans are "identity -
preserved." Snobelen's system
provides that audit trail.
"We can track every truck to every
bin," said Snobelen. And if buyers
are still insecure, they can always
read the sign posted on the door of
Snobelen's farm. It says it all.
"Genetically modified beans are not
received at this pit."0
