It seemed fitting to pick the example of nuclear power and the failed attempt to use it in peaceful technology. Even though on the surface the record of nuclear energy generation seems pretty good, there were quite a few occasions of near - meltdowns like the one in Pickering three years ago and in Japan and in France! Only the cloak of secrecy and open denial of the dangers have kept the public from open revolt against this deadly technology. If the right combination of errors should happen in a CANDU reactor we could have a Chernobyl right here in Ontario! Even though we now are fully aware of the dangers of nuclear power generation — both technically and economically — there is a strong trend in Bruce County to ignore them and push on with refurbishing of the older reactors (originally slated to be "laid up") to save, as is claimed, 2,000 jobs. The cost of retubing and rehabilitating is officially estimated at over $2 billion — that's 2000 million dollars.
