Beef industry pricing archaic: value -based pricing needed A few weeks ago I had a first-hand reminder of how urgently the beef industry pricing needs reform. We must ask ourselves — what other commodity in the world takes their product to market and is at the mercy of the buyers there that day, to determine what that product is worth? The answer is, very few other commodities, but the beef industry. Whether it be finished cattle, feeders, veal, cull cows, bulls or purebred seedstock, we seem to be consistently stupid when we try to market them. Why should honest producers put up with the volatility of cattle buyers? I think it is time we stop auctioning our product and set a standard price for specific areas of the industry.
