Agriculture and Agri -Food
Canada is investing $200,000
through its Matching Investment
Initiative to test a new
composting system.
Consistency is the key to
composting success, according
to HUWS Corporation of
Palgrave, Ontario, which is the
North American manufacturer
and distributor of the Herhof
Composting Biocell. It's match-
ing the federal investment in a
four-year joint research project
to prove that consistent compost
can significantly boost yields.
Also involved in the project is
Dr. G. Whitfield of the Green-
house and Processing Crop
Research Centre at Harrow.
When waste goes into a
Herhof Biocell a consistently
stabilized and sterilized compost
comes out without the green-
house gases, odor and leachate
normally associated with
composting, the parties say.0

While new ethanol distilleries
being built in Ontario are
designed to use corn to produce
the alcohol, research at
Agriculture and Agri -Food
Canada's Soils and Crops
Research and Development
Centre in Sainte -Foy, Quebec
suggests Jerusalem artichoke
may be the plant of the future.
The research shows the plant
yields up to 18 tonnes per
hectare of ethanol producing
biomass. It's also a tough
competitor, choking out weeds.0
