Butler designed and built a crush to give the deer minimum stress and yet totally immobilize them when they are confined. The hydraulically operated crush opens to allow the deer to walk in, then two padded arms come together against the deer's sides to hold the animal snugly. It is then lifted off its feet and cannot struggle and hurt itself. Between tagging, blood testing and antler removal, the animals are handled regularly and become accustomed to the procedure, though some are skittish afterward and cannot be coaxed into the barn for their grain. Butler feels that his horse may be intimidating enough to handle them when they just run in the opposite direction of someone chasing them on foot. Butler often relies on his horse for farm work throughout the year. "If a cow breaks out, the first thing I look for is the horse. She can run faster than I can," he says. He also checks the fences in spring and goes team penning once a week. The practice comes in handy if he is called on to round up stray or breakaway cattle with the help of other like-minded friends. His son, Shawn, is a trainer and blacksmith and raises and sells painted ponies for riding and showing. Some people say that farming is like a riding horse: each has its ups and downs. The Butlers have experienced both, but they operate a successful operation with the help of innovative ideas, hard work, a good business sense ... and Bob's horse.0
