Sheep dog trials
spotlight skills
of talented dogs
For most people, watching a
well-trained sheep dog in action
is a jaw -dropping experience.
With only a few signals, the dog
can organize a bunch of
stubborn sheep and herd them to
the desired destination.
Some of North America's best
sheep dogs will be showing
their talents for those in
attendance at the 4th Annual
Western Ontario Sheep Dog
Trials in Palmerston, August 16
and 17,
With a purse of $2,000 the
show is part of a circuit of top
shows in North America . These
dogs are judged by their
performance, not their
conformation. It is the execution
of ordinary farm tasks, and the
communications between the
handler and the dog that count.
Dogs are judged on their ability
to take sheep through a course
in a steady and workman -like
way, causing the sheep a
minimum of anxiety.
At the beginning of the test,
the handler and dog take their
position at the handler's stake.
On signal, the dog is expected to
go wide and beyond the sheep
before circling in. The initial
contact with the sheep should be
cautious and calm, with the
sheep not unduly startled. The
dog is then to manoeuvre the
sheep, on signal from the
handler, in various patterns,
before the sheep are put into a
pen. Just to add to the challenge
one of the sheep is to be chosen
and isolated from the others.
All this is done while judges
are watching for loss of control
or any unnecessary actions. The
handler can help the dog put the
sheep in the pen but is penalized
for providing too much
assistance.
The trials begin each day at 9
a.m. There are also special
attractions such as sheep
