Program offers
assistance for hiring
The Summer Jobs Service is
designed to create new jobs for
Ontario youth. The program offers
wage assistance of $2 per hour to
create new jobs for youth in all
business sectors including
agriculture.
To be an eligible employer for this
program, one must:
• Hire the youth after April 15, 1997;
wage assistance is provided up to a
maximum of 16 weeks from April 15
- September 30, 1997.
• Provide at least the Ontario
minimum hourly wage of $6.85 for
students above 18 years of age and
$6.40 for students under the age of
18. Assistance will be provided for a
maximum of 35 hours each week.
• Pay other employment costs and
deductions including Workers'
Compensation Board coverage.
An eligible youth must be
between the ages of 15-24 or
between the ages of 15 - 29 if
disabled and be a resident of Ontario
and eligible to work in Canada. Also
one must not have worked more than
15 hours in the month prior to
participating in this program and not
be an immediate family member. The
youth must be planning to return to
school.
The employers must complete all
sections of the application form to
meet approval. Employers are
eligible to hire more thin one student
under the program.°
Spring seeding time is also a time
when the inventory of pesticides on a
farm is often the greatest. Proper
pesticide storage makes good sense.
From a legal standpoint, the
Pesticide Act is the regulation that
deals with the proper handling,
transportation, storage, use and
disposal of agricultural chemicals
and should be referred to for specific
requirements. Storage is a key part of
this legislation and farmers should
consider the following when
planning a pesticide storage facility
for the farm.
• Separate building or room used
exclusively for the storage of
pesticides.
• Storage must be ventilated and
screened to the outside.
• Access to the storage from outside
only and the door lockable to control
access.
• A "chemical storage warning" sign
must be posted at the entrance.
(These signs are available at
OMAFRA offices.)
• The storage must have an
impervious floor with no floor drain
and with a curb around the perimeter.
• Storage may need insulation and
heat to protect chemicals from
freezing.
• Insecticides, herbicides and
fungicides should be separated in the
storage.
• Have protective clothing readily
available.
• Emergency numbers posted.
• All pesticides stored in original
