Perth Pork Producers' honour
producers, promoters of the year
Joe and Theresia Kolkman of
Kolgie Swine, Monkton were
honoured by the Perth County
Pork Producers' as "Producers of
the Year" at the group's annual
meeting in Milverton, January 30.
The couple has farmed together
since 1982, building a prize-
winning breeding herd. Joe has
also served a two-year term with
the Ontario Swine Improve-ment
Inc., one year on the executive.
They are involved in church and
community activities. The
Kolkmans were unable to be
present to accept their award.
Fred and Ingrid DeMartines of
Sebringville were given the
promotion award for their work
with the PCPPA's barbecue
committee. The committee sold
more than 18,000 pounds of pork
last year at events such as the
Stratford Home and Garden
Show, and Zurich Bean Festival.
Ingrid sent out over 450 invoices
for pork.
The couple have a farrow -to -
finish operation and raise wild
boar.0
Ron Douglas given
Long-time Ontario Pork board
member Ron Douglas was named
"Producer of the Year" at the annual
meeting of the Huron County Pork
Producers' Association in Clinton,
January 23.
The Wroxeter -area farmer has also
been involved in developing the code
of practice for pork producers. He has
worked with the Royal Winter Fair and
the Canadian National Exhibition to
educate urban consumers about the
farmers' efforts to humanely handle
their livestock. At the local level he is

involved in the Howick Fall Fair and
the Belmore Maple Syrup Festival.
In accepting the award, Douglas
said he wanted to share it with his wife
Sharon for the extra work she had
done while he undertook off -farm
activities. "The pork industry has been
our life. I spent 45 days away from our
farm promoting the industry and
promoting animal welfare."
The Huron association also pre-
sented a "Retailer of the Year" award
to Veal's Meat Market and Abattoir,
R.R.3, Exeter.°
Perth Emu
Producers elect
executive
Sylvia Roth was elected president
of the Perth County Emu Producers
when they held their annual meeting
in Sebringville in January.
Vice-president is Ian Hyatt.
Secretary is Rhonda Ehgoetz.
Treasurer is Linda Kollman. John
Hicknell is the delegate to the
Federation of Agriculture and for the
1998 Emu Congress. Ernie Hunt is
in charge of promotions; Laurie and
Barry Walls head up participation in
Heart Burn Day and Rhonda Ehgoetz
heads the scrap -book committee.
On March 1, the group will host
an emu congress at the Mitchell and
District Community Centre from
8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.0
Bruce Agri -food
council formed
Jayne Dietrich of Mildmay is the
president of the 1997 executive for
the Bruce County Agri -Food
Education Council. The council was
established as an umbrella group for
agriculture and food education
programs such as Agri -Food Week,
"The Roots of Bruce" grade 6
education program and a new Agri -
Tourism Farm Tour called the "Rural
Rally", the week of August 16.
Other executive members include:
Marg McCready, secretary -treasurer;
Timothy Willick, public relations,
and Peter Canning.0
Charolais Association
elects Dudgeon
Brian Dudgeon of Dobbinton
was elected president of the Ontario
Charolais Association at its annual
meeting in Owen Sound in
December.
Other western Ontario people on
the executive are: Robert Emerson,
Ripley, second vice-president and
Keith Alexander, Cargill.
Also honoured was past president
Ross Laycock of Owen Sound.°
