participants enrolled in other
provincial programs," he says.
OFMAP is a co-operative effort of
farmers and OMAFRA staff.
Information is submitted by farmers
with the assistance of staff. The data
is then processed by computer, and
business reports containing financial
and physical information are
provided to the farmer. These reports
provide comparisons to the group by
commodity.
"Since 1969, OFMAP has been
fully computerized. With the
spreadsheet program, or 'OFMAP-
on-Disk', we can provide local input
and immediate generation of reports,
bringing to producers a wide range of
production and management
information in a timely manner,"
Winslade explains.
The individual reports contain
common financial statements and
ratios, including a comparison to
provincial averages for individual
operations. Participating farmers also
receive a five-year progress report.
With financial and production
reports, farmers are better able to
identify profitability, strengths and
weaknesses and efficiency of the
farm business; compare with
budgeted plans for this year and with
previous years' results; analyze
trends over a period of years; and
compare the farm business to group
averages of similar farms.
The second objective is to prepare
group summaries for use by farmers,
staff and agri-business personnel for
comparative analysis and budgeting
information. This provides a valuable
data base for policy purposes such as
the development of safety nets.
"We thank producers who are
taking part in the program, and we
are hoping that more farmers will
take advantage of the service. It is
useful and almost essential to farm
managers in making business
decisions. As more farms get into the
program, more data will be available
to produce the provincial summaries,
and this in tum will provide farmers
with more accurate data."
