range of forestry management
services including impartial advice
' on harvesting and selling timber. He
joins other former MNR employees
who are now offering private
consulting services to woodlot
owners. It's a route pioneered by
forestry technician Murray Hall of
Wingham who took early retirement
in an earlier round of MNR cuts and
now operates Wingham Forestry
Service.
Unlike
Smith, Jim Eccles and
Dave Taylor weren't taken by
surprise by the May 16
announcements. As forest
management technicians with the
Owen Sound office of MNR, they
could see the writing on the wall for
the elimination of their jobs. The
ministry had been moving away from
providing advice for landowners and

In Grey and Bruce, the Grcy
Sauble and Saugeen Valley
Conservation Authorities also saw
opportunities in the need for
landowners to get advice. The two
authorities teamed to offer Grey
Bruce Forestry Service, a fee-for-
service forest management company
offering everything from tree
marking and tendering to tree
planting, weed control and tree
pruning.
MNR's Bennett says former staff
were encouraged to offer their
expertise to the public and when
people call asking for services
formerly offered by MNR, like tree
marking, they're made aware of the
private consultants who are out there.
In an effort to circulate more general
advice on woodlot management,
MNR has encouraged the formation
of a Huron -Perth Chapter of the
Ontario Woodlot and Sawmill
Operators Association.
Victor Roland of Gorrie is
president of the Woodlot and
Sawmill Operators Association, now
entering its second year. He calls the
MNR cuts "a blow to production
farmers." Farmers don't have the
time to study good woodlot
management, he says, and MNR was
