Grain Markets
Crop prices
remain volatile
Grain markets have maintained
extreme volatility over the past
month but old crop corn prices have
peaked and are now falling quickly.
However, both new crop soybeans
and corn prices have held relatively
well and could gain substantially
with any news that will shrink the
crops. Right now, USDA is still
projecting a corn crop of 9.3 billion
bushels and 2.3 billion bushels of
soybeans for 1996. But, their
assumed acreage is too high for
corn and too low for soybeans and
their projected yield for corn is still
at 123 bu/acre. Last year's
experience tells us that yield could
easily be closer to 115 bu/acre.
The USDA reports in August
and September will be very
important as acreage and yield
should both be adjusted.
The wheat crop in Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio and Michigan was
well as Ontario has been hit hard by
fusarium which can produce toxins.
This wheat will begin to compete
with corn in feed rations even
though it will have to be diluted.
CORN
The corn market ran higher
during the week of July 8 before
hitting the skids on July 15. Old
crop corn has led the way down as
demand in the U.S. finally dropped
off dramatically. There are traders
who think September futures could
fall 90 cents to $1.00/bu because of
this sudden lack of demand. New
crop corn however, hasn't been hit
as hard although December corn
