Tony Morris, OFA President, to visit Huron
OFA President Tony Morris is
scheduled to visit Huron County for a
1 - 2 day visit late this summer.
While here, it is hoped he will be able
to meet with a number of farm
operators to discuss matters of mutual
concern and interest. His itinerary
has not been determined, as of yet.
Further details will be announced
later.
Several weeks ago, the Clinton
OMAFRA office experienced a
painful adjustment when a number of
positions were eliminated as a result
of Government restraint. The Huron
Federation of Agriculture is
concerned that this loss in expertise is
not beneficial to agriculture, either in
the short term, or in the long term. In
addition, the ongoing uncertainty for
the past several months about this
restructuring, has, no doubt, caused a
tremendous amount of stress for
those involved. It is indeed difficult
to plan for programs and to be able to
carry on one's work, when living
under a cloud of this sort.
The Huron Federation of
Agriculture would like to thank all
those who have left the Clinton
OMAFRA office, for a job well done,
under trying and difficult
circumstances. The Huron
Federation would also like to express
our thanks to those who remain, for a
job well done, and our sincere wish
that we can all get on with the
business of making agriculture in
Huron County better for us all.
The Huron Federation of
Agriculture has some concerns about
the possibility that one, or even
several Ministries, may relocate to
the Clinton OMAFRA office. At the
risk of appearing selfish, the farm
community in Huron lobbied
extensively for this building to allow
OMAFRA to better meet the needs of
Huron County agriculture. We still
believe that the primary purpose of
this facility should be agricultural,
and that any dilution of agriculture's
importance in the function of the
building would be detrimental to
agriculture in Huron.
A final area of interest for the
Huron Federation has to do with what
we see as a possibility that increases

in self-regulation, and continued de-
regulation, could lead to an actual, or
even perceived, reduction in
Canada's and Ontario's outstanding
reputation as suppliers of high quality
food products and superior genetic
material, for world markets. Our
agricultural industry has a well
deserved reputation for quality that,
we feel, could suffer if changes to
how we do things are not handled
properly.0
