The Rural Voice, 1996-07, Page 55Advice prices and reduced weaning weights due to poorer than normal pasture conditions. For cow -calf producers, we may, as in early 1970s have to try to do more with Icss inputs. This may mean putting up better quality hay crops or by cutting hay crops a little earlier. This may mean using more conservation in the storing and proper feeding of the hay crop. It may mean more intensive use of pasture land, freeing up more land base for gain production. Currently, grain prices are about $125/tonne higher than at the same time in 1995. If the grain prices continue to rise, this will certainly put more pressure on feeder cattle prices this fall. After 10 years of tripartite stabilization, it would appear that the ravages of the traditional beef cycle are starting to return. Unfortunately, for the producers in the cow -calf business, there is no real protection from this monster, the beef cycle.0 Cutting costs in your beef herd By Joanne Handley OMAFRA Beef Specialist Four key factors influencing profitability are: 1. Percent of cows weaning calves 2. Annual cost of maintaining a cow 3. Weaning weight of calves 4. Selling price of calves With the calf crop on the ground, you cannot influence the number of cows weaning calves to any Targe degree, as long as calves are kept alive until weaning. If calf survival at birth was a problem this year, determine the cause and make required changes for next year. In this article we'll focus on reducing the annual cost of maintaining a cow. Ten steps to cutting costs: 1. Determine your costs of production. 2. Minimize the use of harvested forages (i.e. extend grazing season by rotating and/or stockpiling pasture). 3. Strive to reduce land costs charged to the cow -calf operation. 4. Improve reproductive efficiency. i Commission on Election Finances Commission sur le financement des elections o,uro SUMMARY OF INCOME AND CAMPAIGN EXPENSES OF CANDIDATES IN THE JUNE 8, 1995 GENERAL ELECTION PUBLISHED AS A REQUIREMENT OF THE ELECTION FINANCES ACT ELECTORAL DISTRICT OF HURON INCOME SUBSIDY CANDIDATE PARTY BEFORE CAMPAIGN PAID TO SUBSIDY EXPENSES CANDIDATE $ $ $ HELEN JOHNS MPP PCP 26,181,00 43,360.00 8,827.45 JOHN JEWITT LIB 20,190.00 40,033.00 8,827.45 PAUL KLOPP NDP 17,760.00 29,292.40 8,827.45 PHIL CORNISH FCP 7,340.00 3,364.31 0.00 KIMBLE AINSLIE IND 560.00 553.00 0.00 The Information shown above has been taken from financial statements filed with the Commission by the chief financial officer of the candidate, and when applicable, combined with that of the endorsing constituency association.
