1996 4-H Funfest
draws 60 members
At the Walkerton Agricultural
Buildings on Saturday, May 25, 60
eager but yct nervous 10 - 13 -year
olds gathered for the third Huron -
Grey -Bruce 4-H Funfcst. Activities
began at 9:30 with the 4-H pledge
and a list of all sponsors being
recited.
Six teams then rotated between
Soccer, Baseball, Kings Court and
Soft Spots. By lunch time there were
many hungry children. After
consuming numerous pizzas and ice
cream bars they were ready to go at it
again. The afternoon was filled with
numerous 15 -minute relays such as
fire bucket brigade, break the
balloons, obstacle course and
bowling. This was a great beginning
for many 4 -Hers to encounter others
in their neighbouring counties.0

By Doug Dickie
OMAFRA Beef Advisor
Prices received by cow -calf and
stocker calf producers are
considerably less this spring
compared to last spring. All sectors
of this industry, whether calves,
cows, replacement heifer, or breeder
bulls have sold under pressure. The
bulls sold at the 13th Annual Bull
Sale at Hanover, for $220 less than
Tots sold in 1995, with an unusually
large number of lots (21) going
unsold.
This change in sales for the cow -
calf industry has also occurred
throughout North America and is not
just a local occurrence. Dr. Harlan
Hughes of North Dakota State
University, Agriculture Economics
Department in his May newsletter
said considerable reductions in net
returns have occurred to cow -calf
producers for the 1995 year. He
indicates the main reason for the
lowered net farm return as poorer
