Everything is looking interesting
Any opinions expressed herein
may not necessarily reflect the views
of the Perth County Pork Producers'
Association.
Wow! It's May 1, 1996 and
everything is looking very interesting
for the coming season. It's the start
of a new seeding crop year, what I
call another season's promise.
Perth County pork farmers take
time out from their busy barn
schedules to plant corn, soybeans,
grain, white beans or whatever they
intend to plant. By the time you read
this, let's hope that the planting
season is almost complete.
I am writing this now because the
wet and cold weather is driving me
like a duck to water, calm and cool
on top but pedalling like crazy below
the water, to get ahead.
Hogs for May are $1.83 per kg, as
you know. Reality set in when we
are paying the highest price ever for
corn at $6.50 per bu, soybean meal is
at $400 plus per tonne and oats at
$330 per tonne for the horses. Land
rent is sky high with farmers splitting
their fingernails trying to make a
profit from these wild and crazy
scenarios.

pork meeting for May as we are all
supposed to be planting our crops,
but as you all know, it's been a very
cold and wet spring because the jet
stream is not coming up from the gulf
yet. So until it changes, the planting
of seeds will be put on hold.
On to some pork views. I recently
phoned the Ontario Pork board and
asked how many tamers called
periodically to see how well they are
doing in tattooing their own hogs by
finding out how many plugs they had.
They said very few called. It's also
interesting to note that the Pork
Board has one to four pages on the
Internet. hip//www.ontariopork.on.

I would like to inform all Perth
County Pork Producers that they are
all invited to our county meetings as
well as our annual meetings. Feel
free to join us, for discussion, and we
are always looking for able people to
help out in our association and in the
Pork Congress areas. By the way, the
Pork Congress this year will be held
at the Stratford Fairgrounds on June
20 and 21. Come out and support it.
You don't have to be a director to
help out and enjoy.
In the number of years that 1 have
been a director, I have learned more
than I have contributed to this great
organization, working with other
members at the county level as well
as at the Ontario level.
May all the pork producers have a
safe and enjoyable spring and
summer.°
