performances were two locally -
grown comic performers. Albert
MacDonald was well known by that
name in Lucknow, where he was
born, but everywhere else in the
region he was known as Cactus Mac
who performed Hillbilly tunes and
cracked jokes. From Belgrave came
"the singing Irishman", Clarke
Johnston, who could sing, joke and
step -dance.
In the 1950s Slim Boucher and his
Golden Prairie Cowboys were added
to the CKNX talent pool. And what
talent it was. Featured fiddler was Al
Cherney, a classically -trained
violinist who turned to country music
and won a Canadian Championship
while in Wingham. Later he was to
gain national celebrity status with
Tommy Hunter's television show.
Also in the group was Maurice
Bealieu (Boyler) who would go on to
be honoured in Hollywood on
Lawrence Welk's show as the
world's most famous banjo player.
These were some of the stars of
the Barn Dance, the people
old and young flocked to see
when the Barn Dance came to
town. But other up and coming stars
also sought guest appearances on the
