The Rural Voice, 1996-05, Page 41moved away for school and work. Later, the Traynors returned to Sydenham Township. Recently, Michael and Jerrie purchased his former family farm and proceeded to restore the 150 -year-old farmhouse. The focus of this chapter is the changes that have been made over the years to the century farms. Michael notes, "I was surprised to see the large number of farms that qualify as century farms. Interesting stories accompany how these farms have been passed from one generation to the next" The Sydenham History Seekers have been very creative in their financing of this project. The New Horizons grant provided much of the start-up funding. In addition, the committee has been actively selling membership for $5. A membership guarantees the member a copy of the book. The membership fee is also applied to the cost of the book. Approximately 500 memberships have been sold. In addition, Sydenham Township Council has demonstrated its support for this project. Council has provided an interest free loan to assist the group until copies are sold. "I feel this project has been very rewarding," says Viola Bothwell. And the real reward will come this The real reward will come with the publishing of a history book this summer summer when copies of history of Sydenham Township: Volume II will be available. With an expected publication of 1,500 copies, these books will be in demand. To reserve a copy, just call Viola Bothwell at 376-7475. Viola encourages other townships to preserve their local history as well. Interested community members need only contact Viola as she would be glad to share the knowledge her group has gained from this project. Preserving the history of rural Ontario becomes a challenge. It is a challenge that the Sydenham History Seekers have overcome for their community. According to tradition, it will likely be 2025 before the History of Sydenham Township: Volume //1 is published. Imagine the changes we'll see by then!O It's May and we're not fooling!
