told the Crops Day at the Grey -Bruce
Farmers Week in January. Natural
units arc "a part of the field that is
morc similar than the field as a
.whole."
Fmcrs
who want to go the next
ep in the system can use hook
p to Global Positioning. GPS
is an outgrowth of Ronald Reagan's
Star Wars technology, a system of 24
satellites that helped the American
military, through intersecting circles
of signals from more than one
satellite, to pinpoint a location
anywhere on the earth's surface
within a few feet. In what is truly a
case of beating high-tech swords into
plow shares, the system is now
available for agriculture.
Applying the space-age tech-
nology to the next step, variable
application of seed and fertilizer to
the needs of each plot of ground,
requires a very down-to-earth, old-
fashioned technology — soil testing.
Systematic sampling of soil fertility
across the field will be imporuint in
determining the potential for
improving yields or decreasing input
costs through yield mapping of the
field.
So far, pioneering farmers like
Bruce Shillinglaw of Londesborough,
have been building up data just for
their own farm. The
OMAFRA/Univcrsity of Guelph
study will be gathering a lot of
information in a short time. In the
next few years researchers will be
able to see if varying the application
of nitrogen will have a response on
some parts of the field on an annual
basis, or if the really key variable,
season to season, is moisture.
"Things arc going to change really
quickly," Reid told the Farmers'
Week audience. "We're gathering
data that in the long run is going to
pay back."
Still, some dealers indicated, the
new equipment is likely to remain the
interest of thc more adventurous farm
operators for the immediate future.
There arc still some bugs to be
worked out, one dealer admitted.
For farmers morc concerned about
updating current technology than
stepping into the future, the changes
for this year arc much smaller. Agco-
Whitc dealers see a breakthrough
with the 6800 planter that can adjust
all the way from 10 inch rows to 30

TOP DRY
HOW DOES THE
G. S. I. SYSTEM WORK?
1) Grain is loaded into the upper chamber
of the bin, and dried as a batch
2) When the grain is dry, the burner
automatically shuts off
3) The operator lowers the dump chutes
with a winch, and the grain falls to the
lower part of the bin for cooling/storage
4) The dump chutes are cranked closed
and another batch is loading into the
drying chamber
WHY IS A TOP DRY A BETTER INVESTMENT
THAN A STIRRING MACHINE?
1) LOWER OPERATING COSTS
' Uses much less fuel because it recycles cooling air through
the drying zone
' No gear boxes, motors, or bearings Inside the bin
* 100% galvanized construction inside and outside
2) FASTER DRYING
* 2 to 3 times faster per horsepower than a stirring machine
because of lower grain depth (30")
