18 THE RURAL VOICE
Agriculture in many ways on
township, county and provincial
committees. He has been president of
his township Federation, vice-
president of Grey County Fedcration
and is still active on the OFA Rural
Affairs Committee ("thEy wouldn't
let me on the Land Use Committee,"
he said with a twinkle) and he
continues to serve on the Grcy
County Federation's Property
Committee, which allows him to put
to good use his police training, when
it comes to researching individual
Grey County farmers' entanglements
with officialdom
He was active in the Grcy County
Humane Society, and was
instrumental in preventing it from
being absorbed into the provincial
organization.
Karl is also active in church
affairs, serving in several
capacities in the local Baptist
Church.
He is also registered with the
Attorney General's department as an
official court translator and often
serves as a translator in court and
court -related matters.
In 1989 the Grey -Bruce Mental
Health Association in co-operation
with the Federation of Agriculture in
the two counties, formed Rural
Connections, an organization whose
mandate was to provide neighbour -
to -neighbour support and assistance
to farm families that were having
difficulty dealing with the crises
brought on by the economic turmoil
in the farming industry in the '80s. It
was a two-year program. In 1992
Rural Connections II was established
to run for another year to promote
community service and education
programs. Braeker served as a board
member for the first program and
chairman of the second. At the last
meeting of Rural Connections II they
reconstituted themselves into the
current organization, Market Grey -
Bruce. "We believe," said Karl, "that
we produce food with a quality
second to none and we want the
consumer to be able to recognize it."
The group last year organized a
successful food fair in Owen Sound
(its second food fair is April 14) and
continues to promote locally grown
food in the region. They believe this
will stimulate the local economy and
retain greater wealth in the arca.
