PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT CROP ADVISORY SERVICES
Grain Markets
elevators and the coni piles get
moved inside, there could even be
some empty space. With good
exports to date and good domestic
usage, basis levels should improve by
the time spring rolls around. As of
November 17, old crop basis ranged
from 70 cents to 75 cents over
December futures.
SOYBEANS
USDA lowered 1995 soybean
production as well as the projected
carryover in a slightly surprising
November report. However, after a
sharp rally, prices faded quickly and
have been unable to get another rally
started. It looks like prices will
remain static for a while before
finding direction.
In Ontario, harvest is virtually
complete and yields appear to be
excellent and finally, there is some
light at the end of the storage tunnels.
Soybean movement is much
smoother now that the harvest crunch
is over and basis is holding well.
Basis levels for winter shipment does
show some good carry and producers
can lock in some good prices. Basis
levels are quite respectable at $1.65
over November '96 futures and still
nets a price of about $8.30/bu.
FEED GRAINS
The most notable price change
over the last month has been the
strengthening in Ontario barley prices
to the $150 to $155 range. Tight
farmer holding has been a big factor
leading to higher prices. Usage is
minimal but even so, prices should
remain quite strong because western
feed grain prices are even higher.
Grain prices, in general, have
softened since last month but not for
fundamental reasons. Both the corn
and soybean markets are trading in a
20 cent range and could continue like
this into the new year. In January,
the USDA report will be extremely
important because it will include
quarterly stocks as of January 1,
revised supply/demand reports and
final production numbers. However,
some traders are already of the
