The Rural Voice, 1995-09, Page 57our room for a library effect.
The vintage chandelier is being
lowered for a more homey effect. The
table is to be draped in a wine -berry
cloth, then overlaid with an antique
lace tablecloth. Tired leather chair
scats arc being reupholstered in a
pretty pin -dot upholstery fabric.
Older lace curtains are being topped
with valances in a cabbage rose
"knock -off' designer's print.
The client's knick-knacks and wall
art are scanned for the appropriate
pieces to complement this room.
We're spending a sizeable amount on
a large, showy artificial arrangement
in the new "garden -gathered" look to
adorn the table and add interest to our
focal point. Once our cash flow is
sufficient we'll be in the market for an
oriental carpet to top off the hardwood
floor under the table.
In the living room, we have a
relatively new country -style set with a
cream ground and floral design in
greens. The walls have been a soft
taupe. To soften the effect of the
ceiling height we'll paint the cove
moulding in dual tones of teal green.
We've rearranged the furniture to
create a more pleasing conversational
grouping. We need to spend some
money on less expensive semi -sheer
drapery and valances in an awning
stripe fashioned in a tailored style.
Beautiful crystal table lamps will
be updated with appropriate new lamp
shades, and once again we'll make
selections of appropriate art work and
accessories.
We're painting over the tired, old
wallcovering in the main entrance
hall. Once completed we'll rag the
walls in soft taupe and almond tones
to tie into our colour scheme. The
worn stair treads are being ripped off
and we're painting the stairway in teal
green and then adorning each riser
with an "egg and dart" stencil design.
The entrance door will also feature
our teal green while the railing and
banister will be buffed to a lustrous
wooden sheen.
Proceeding to our final room, the
bath, we're happy to be working with
new almond fixtures. The proportions
in this room are very awkward, the
lighting poor and it features a very
low window in a most revealing arca!
We're treating the window in a
complete coverage of do-it-yourself
"redi-etch" frosted glass. This will
Decorating
add needed coverage, yet allow the
window to be opened.
The walls are featuring a wonderful
tone -on -tone vinyl wallcovering in an
almond floral. Hollywood -style
makeup lights will aid grooming
duties. Accessories and towels will
echo our almond, teal green and
wineberry colour scheme.
Once all our cost effective updates
are completed we'll be able to set
budgets for the master bedroom and
kids' rooms.
Over the next few years we'll add
pieces to complete various areas and
start replacing older wallcoverings.
Our house will start becoming our
home with each new update.
With planned foresight, this
strategy will work for you. The tricks
are in setting a realistic budget,
analyzing pros and cons of your
home and remembering patience!
