Groggily, reluctantly, he arose and
made it understood he had planned
to see Nova Scotia too. I made
whimpering sounds of distress. "Do
you realize", he pleaded with me,
"how far from home we are right
now. I don't know whether I can
get you there by tonight."
"I have every confidence in you,"
I assured him. It wasn't misplaced.
We whizzed by Quebec City.
Montreal was a little tougher to get
through at mid-day, but the Wrench
never faltered. Our stops were
infrequent and only when absolutely
necessary. Toronto proved to be the
worst to navigate through. He
managed it. When we finally rolled
to stop in our carport, I gently
disengaged his fingers from the
steering wheel and led him up to our
own bed. I was home. Before he
fell comatose, Super Wrench
sleepily admitted I'd done well. "I
didn't think I'd get you past seven
days." It was a victory of sorts, for
both of us.0
