The Rural Voice, 1995-05, Page 61News & Advice committee felt the objective to increase student awareness and understanding of agriculture focusing on Bruce county was a resounding success, Dietrich said. The students developed skills, knowledge and values necessary to become well informed decision makers and consumers. "Roots of Bruce" was months in the making with both the Bruce -Grey Separate Board and the Bruce County Public Board fully endorsing the program. The committee met with principals, librarians, and school board officials. As well the attending grade 6 teachers attended one of two agriculture workshops hosted by the committee and presented by Bruce Quinn, the Ontario Agri -Food Education consultant for southwestern Ontario. In November each grade 6 teacher received information and an application to Roots of Bruce. In January there was a followup notice and reminder to these teachers. In March a final newsletter was distributed to attending schools. An agriculture teaching unit was presented to the teachers and followup classroom packages were distributed to each participating class. The teachers are encouraged to follow up the Roots of Bruce visit with additional class instruction. The teachers were asked to divide their class into three groups to visit one of the three buildings on the site. The students were given colour- coded buttons to wear to the "Roots of Bruce" and were asked to sit in those groups on the bus. This enabled volunteers to easily unload and identify students at the event. The students visited only one of the three buildings and this encouraged communication skills of presentation and communication between students afterward in the classroom. This was a highly time efficient program and every second counted from unloading the bus to loading again. The students visited eight stations of 10 action -packed minutes each. The final 10 minutes was a rally with all students once again combined with retired superintendent Joe Rys and Fran Farrell, who wrote a song BODMIN SWINE GENETICS Proven Genetics for Profitable Pork R.R. 5, BRUSSELS, ONT., CANADA NOG 1H0 Phil Smith 1- 519-764-2898 Fax 1-519-764-2696 Rick Beunen 1-519-631-2341 Res./Fax Boar Store 519-887-9206 GET READY FOR SPRING Let us build you a fertilizer New for 1995 and chemical program to meet your requirements.
