52 THE RURAL VOICE
News & Advice
South, and 1st Vice President OFA,
stated that the government needs to
"recognize a different work environ-
ment on family farms."
Jackson stated that farmers have
an exemption for this and advised
farm businesses to ask their
individual accountants about their
status on this issue.
Firearms control: The BCFA does
not ... "support restricting farmers'
ability to possess, obtain, and use
firearms"... "This (registration)
appears to be a cash cow for the
government and will do nothing to
prevent criminals from obtaining and
using guns."
Steckle stated, "I have clearly
indicated from the beginning of the
C-17 gun issue that I would not
support it." Jackson added, "This
discussion in the House is rural vs.
urban, and there are more urban
members in the House ..."
Steckle supported a request to the
government to split the bill: the crime
element vs. guns. "If the legislation
is passed in its present form, it will
cause Canadians much concern,"
Steckle concluded.
Rural Health Care: "There is no
reason why rural residents should not
have access to 24-hour emergency
health care". . . "There is no
verification of charges when a person
uses the health care system".. .
"should combine drivers' license and
health care cards to save money..."
Jackson is a member of the Health
Commission Forum and he affirmed
that there is a need for more MDs in
rural communities.
Weather Offices: The brief said it is
important to "maintain accurate local
weather forecasting," as many
farming activities depend on weather
station information. The BCFA brief
expressed concern over the closure of
some area weather stations.
Other briefs presented included
the Bruce County Junior Farmers, the
Chicken Producers Marketing Board,
the Bruce County Farm Safety
Association, and the Bruce County
Cattlemen's Association.
President Chris Freiburger of the
Cattlemen's Association highlighted
the brief by: noting the need for more
processors here; stating the group's
