Interior designers, owners of hardware, furniture, carpet, paint and paper and giftware shops have had an extremely busy two months travelling to the many trade shows for 1995. These exhibitions offer professionals and merchants an opportunity to view, touch, operate and purchase the latest Taking in the trade shows interpretations for the "look" of mid - '90s decor. In mid-January more than 300 furniture manufacturers in conjunction with distributors of lighting, artwork and accessories exhibited their latest products at Canada's Home Furniture Market. Within a week it was time to travel to the initial National Gift Show. Amongst elaborate displays, upscale accessories and tablewares are featured alongside a parade of artwork including paintings, prints, sculptures in marble, cement, malachite, iron work and brass. The latest in floral designs and statuary in a multitude of textures were also featured. Next in line, was the former Walls and Windows Showcase, now entitled Interiors Decor Show '95. This presentation included both elegant and flamboyant arrays of products as one visited booth after booth: fabrics to cover windows, walls, furniture, in array with fabrics for bedspreads and accessories; wall coverings in every guise, along with paint companies, carpet manufacturers and dealers in related sundry products; and manufacturers of window shades and blinds. Then, just when a body is about exhausted, the Canadian Hardware and Housewares Exposition is staged. The largest selection imaginable was displayed, running the gamut from electronics, housewares, floor coverings, wall treatments, to hardware, plumbing and electrical supplies. Finally, the second of the spring Gift Shows was staged. This display centres largely on craft dealers and suppliers. So ... you ask ... what does this mean to me? What direction do I, the consumer, take in the purchasing of home furniture and accessories to complement my home and get an up to date flair? In brief, the directional trend of the mid -'90s is very upscale and elegant yet comfortable without pretension. Basically, casual elegance. Gone are the lace, ruffles and bows, along with the floral chintz of the Victorian and both English and French country looks. The key word is "Tuscan", as in the look and simulated feel of the Tuscany countryside of northwest central Italy. Furnishings feature richly textured upholstery in warm -coloured hues ranging from hunter greens, pepper, paprika, royals, and mustards into eggplant shades of mauve and purples. Also noteworthy is the resurfacing of the earth tone shades. This type of covering works well with the gritty textured coffee tables featuring wrought iron legs or those of fossilstone or marble. In both windows and walls we're being introduced to texture played off texture as in featuring rough hewn, faux marble wall coverings in combination with luxurious silk draperies. Window coverings feature natural muslin, tab -style drapery threaded onto a variety of Tuscan -style rods ranging from rusted iron, to verdigris and brass. Rod finials incorporate spearheads, sun faces or curlicues. Gilding the treatment may include a variety of braid, silk cording and tassels looped, draped and positioned slightly assymetrically.
