SX) TOP DRY
HOW DOES THE G.S.I. SYSTEM WORK?
1) Grain is loaded into the upper
chamber of the bin, and
dried as a batch.
2) When the grain is dry,
the burner automatically
shuts off.
3) The operator lowers the dump
chutes with a winch, and the
grain falls to the lower part of
the bin for cooling/storage.
4) The dump chutes are cranked
closed and another batch is
loading into the drying
chamber.
WHY IS A TOP DRY A BETTER INVESTMENT
THAN A STIRRING MACHINE?
1) LOWER OPERATING COSTS
• Uses much less fuel because it recycles cooling
air through the drying zone
• No gear boxes, motors, or bearings inside the bin
• 100% galvanized construction inside and outside
2) FASTER DRYING
• 2 to 3 times faster per horsepower than a stirring machine because of lower
grain depth (30")

moved (the evening of the second
day). By then they should be starting
to eat.
The texture of the feed is
important for pigs that might be
as young as five to 10 days and
have undeveloped teeth. Pelleted and
crumble diets minimize wastage of
the expensive high -protein starter
diets but the pigs may have a hard
time breaking large, hard pellets.
Meal diets are easier to chew but
feed wastage might reach 20 per cent.
Small pellets (3/32" or 1/8") or
crumbles are probably best.
Young pigs are conditioned to eat
frequently from their mother and
Tokach said research at Kansas State
had allowed the young pigs ad lib
consumption. It's important to have
enough feeder spaces for the pigs, but
the dividers between the spaces
shouldn't be solid so the pigs get
used to interacting.
The larger the pig when weaned,
the less requirement for careful
management in the nursery, he said.
A six -pound weaner provides fewer
challenges than a five -pound weaner.
To try to get all pigs as close as
possible to the same size, some
farmers have taken the larger pigs
away for some feedings to allow the
smaller pigs to get extra feed.
Tokach recommended a four-
phase feeding regimen for the
weaners to get excellent
performance. The early feeds get the
pigs eating so they can move to
cheaper feeds. "Grain/soybean meal
based diets are the cheapest and we
want to get to that diet quickly."
The SEW diet (weaning to 11
pounds) needs a variety of protein
sources to meet the young pig's
nutritional needs, to meet the amino
acid requirements and to stimulate
feed intake.
"The only protein source
considered absolutely essential in this
diet is spray -dried blood plasma,"
Tokach says. "Although plasma is
expensive, it is necessary to
encourage maximal feed intake in the
period immediately after weaning.
Increasing the level of plasma from 0
to 15 per cent in the diet of SEW pigs
results in a linear increase in pig
performance." The greatest response,
however, comes from the first five
per cent increase so nutritionists
generally design the ration at five to
