Time to put on a suit and go to town
As I watch the rain come down
today and lower the snow, I can't
help but wonder if some farmers in
this region, province or country are
going to melt away too.
As people have noted this is the
"year of transition". With GATT 12
days old and just beginning, did we
as farmers get all our questions
answered? Last year many were
fence sitting with GATT but this year
new problems could arise to change
the ways we think on our own
operations. Every commodity board
director that I talked to at the OFA
Convention felt the same way:
"Don't be surprised if you see ??" It
was the same thinking. We won a
little here and lost a little there. For
farmers to handle these transitions
that are coming down the road, we
have to look inside our own four
fences.
Do you know your land as well as
you should, the low spots, the wet
spots, the fertilizer requirements, the
soil type, etc., and, most important,
the yield potential of your farm?
There are great people at the Grey &
Bruce OMAFRA offices who can
help in these matters. The road to
success will be governed by the
amount of profit you make and
nobody else.

36 THE RURAL VOICE
There are going to be times in the
coming year or years, when each
farmer will have to take off his hat,
coverall, and boots and become a
business man.
Put that suit and tie on and get out
and get to town. Go to meetings in
your area, go see different bank
managers and get their ideas on your
operation, or feed suppliers,
equipment dealers, etc.
Ask lots of questions of services
available or products that are new.
Only you can save yourself money
that should be in your pocket instead
of someone else's.
Well I must go now, I'm in the
middle of planning things for this
coming year myself, so good luck
and the very best to all of you. P.S.
Remember, don't forget to become a
business man.0
