Home Decorating
Visit brings new ideas
BY KENDRA KRAUTER
As I get down to business at the
computer I wonder where the
summer has gone. There have been
many things that were on my agenda
to do, but alas they were never started
let alone brought
to completion.
In the last six
months we have
been involved in
and attended no
less than 13
beautiful
weddings. I
have been quite
involved in most
of them, with
showers to plan,
churches, arenas,
homes and tents
that needed to be
decorated,
dresses and veils
to make, gifts to buy, and pictures to
take. Is it any wonder that my deck
didn't get finished! My husband's
favourite line is not to mind what
Kendra says as "she is not playing
with a full deck!" (For those readers
that are just tuning in, we started the
construction of a new deck at the
back of our home earlier this
summer.) It certainly has been nice
to walk out onto as we come and go
to work and weddings. Maybe next
year it will be finished and we will be
able to actually entertain on it.
Maybe we'll be having a wedding?
Another friend's daughter is to be
married next year, so she is starting
ahead of time to fix up a few rooms
at her house. I was over to see her
and the living room furniture was
moved out and into every
conceivable spot around the house.
The floor (it is an older home with
floors that ran off in a few different
directions) was being leveled to
accommodate new carpet and base
board. She has done an amazing
amount of work on this home — a
Targe portion of it herself — from
demolition to insulation to drywall to
sponging and stencilling.
When I was there the other day
she asked me what I thought of an
idea that she had come up with for a
door in her living room that goes to
the basement. I think it is very
ingenious and thought I should share
it as a lot of us have older homes with
lots of doors. The door will be
removed and the carpenter is building
a shelving unit with shelves at the top
and doors at the bottom. This will be
mounted on a piano hinge and framed
around (like a door). The back will
be angled to allow it to open and
close. It will be just like in the
movies when the book case opens to
the secret passageway. It will
certainly look great in her room. She
plans to paint it to match the
baseboard so it will look like part of
the architecture of the house. This
would not be suitable for doors that
are high usage but will be perfect for
this as there is another access door to
the basement and this one will only
be used occasionally. I suggested
that we Krazy-Glue the books and
knick-knacks in place so nothing falls
off! Maybe she would have liked the
idea of Velcro!
As we move indoors we will all be
seeing things that need to be done in
the way of decorating. Some of you
will be entertaining a lot in the
upcoming season and will want
everything ship-shape. If you want
renovation or decoration done this is
a busy time, so don't procrastinate
with making that phone call. If you
are a do-it-yourselfer start with a trip
to the paint and wallpaper store.
There are only two months 'til
Christmas!O
'til next month,
