George St. Johns, publisher of the U.S. publication American Small Farm Magazine, also sees a huge growth potential for his magazine, aimed at farmers with up to 100 acres and earning up to $40,000 a year from their farms. For farm machinery dealers and companies, serving this market means extra care. Ford New - Holland's Kinder says the dealer is the key, providing extra help and longer service hours. "Our dealers still put on service nights, and products training for customers. A lot of people say dealers don't do that anymore, but these are happening at a Ford New Holland dealership." They are at McGavin's. Brian McGavin says his family's operation Extra care needed to serve part-time farmer market has always been open Saturdays and that works well for farmers who spend theirdays at other jobs. There's a lot of walk-in business on Saturdays, he says. Kinder says that kind of extra care is worth it because most of the people who buy small tractors buy at least one attachment to go with it. "There's a lot of package buying in this part of the market." Kinder says for his company the key to the heart of the small equipment buyer is a simpler machine without the bells and whistles. A full -featured tractor that looks good for a buyer farming 500 acres doesn't always appear as valuable to someone working 10 acres. "That's why we came out with our value -priced 15 series tractors. Customers were telling us that our products didn't meet their needs, they were over -featured. We have responded to the customer's wants." The 1215, 1715 and 3415 tractors introduced a year ago feature simple gear transmissions and few options. The machines have been well- received in the market, exceeding initial sales projections. "It's like the
