main tractor engine.
Plowing is done at least 10 inches
deep, usually deeper, which has
created a salinity problem by pulling
up subsoil. Twenty horsepower is
required per furrow to pull plows that
are poorly designed. None of the
sprayers, soybean planters or seed
drills Malcolm was given had been
calibrated, or had ever been greased.
Consequently, he observed barley
planted five and a half inches deep
that did not emerge for two and a half
weeks.
There was no shortage of mach-
inery on the farms which averaged
2,000 hectares. Malcolm observed
22 plows on one. Implements are left
outside in various stages of disrepair
in sprawling machinery boneyards.
Russia is the largest manufacturer
of tractors in the world but they have
a life
expectancy of
four years, said
Malcolm.
On a tobacco
farm, women
did the physical
work while men
drove tractors
Russia is blessed
with good land,
cursed by
incompetence
or observed.
The area near the Caspian Sea
where he worked is gently rolling to
level with rich soil and no stones,
said Malcolm. It received 10
centimetres of annual rainfall,
irrigation was common, yet fields
were often spongey or wet because of
poor subsoil drainage, and it was, like
the landlocked Caspian Sea, below
sea level.
Russia, which formed the largest
part of the former Soviet Union, has
four times the arable land of Canada
yet cannot adequately feed its people,
said Malcolm.
The crops he planted were
successfully harvested, although he
was not there to take part in that. The
yields, while better than average for
Russia, were below Canadian
standards, said Malcolm who crops
320 hectares.
He believes the Russian farmers
did listen and benefit from the advice
he offered and he hopes to return to
provide further help and visit people
there who became good friends.
"It is better to assimilate,
understand and assist," said Malcolm
of improving agriculture in Russia.0
