Dare to Care - Get involved in your community
Recently while teaching a Grade 7
and 8 Sunday School class we
discussed the theme "Dare to Care".
The students talked about why
would we want to be bothered. It
was evident their feeling of
hopelessness and lack of enthusiasm
for what was ahead of them. This
changed, though, as we talked about
what life had been when their
forefathers and mothers came to this
country, what life was like during
World War 1 and 2, the Depression,
and now. It became evident that the
one thing that we arc assured of is
change and we have to have the hope
of how it will affect us. They
decided that a big part of that was to
become involved.
That of course reminded me a lot
of our own farm life and life in
general. Sometimes we feel that we
can not make a difference. We
certainly won't if we don't become
involved in the decision-making and
planning.
A recent buzz phrase is "Rural
Economic Development". Here in
Perth we hear this at Health meetings,
Agri -tourism meetings, and the list
goes on. But, it does work and
makes us more aware of each other
and what is going on in our
community.
Recently our home was treated to
a wonderful meal donated by the St.
Marys Farmers Market. Diane
O'Shea cooked the meal and Ron
Marriott and Dave Mahaffy from the
Merchant Association served it. Also

St. Marys recently had its first ever
evening Santa Claus parade. Besides
the beauty of the lights, it was great
to see the merchants, teams,
businesses all working together with
a great turn out from the surrounding
rural area. Being there and involved.
One of the ways I am being
involved is calling my MPP Karen
Haslam to inform her that if the
teachers in Perth County were
striking I would not be pleased. Did
you know that the employees of the
Liquor Control Board can not go on
strike as they are an essential service
- and our teachers are NOT?? This is
a place I feel we all can make a
difference, by calling and voicing our
opinions. If they don't hear from us
how are they to know? There are too
many Boards on strike or talking
about it. We must get this service to
be an essential service. It does not
matter if it is OUR board or not. The
message is a provincial concern for
our students. Dare to Care can have a
positive effect on us in our family,
farm, community and the larger
community around. I encourage you
to become involved.
As I prepare to attend the annual
FOA conference I look forward to
meeting more people involved and
enthused about this business of
farming - willing to dare to care.0
