The Rural Voice, 1993-12, Page 47improvements are still to come in this industry. Wood burning stoves are enjoying a renaissance today as a serious heating source. They now heat an estimated 358,000 Ontario homes — about 15 per cent of all single family dwellings. This not - insignificant amount of energy approximates the output of Bruce Generating Station A or B. Use of this ageless, renewable fuel has become increasingly convenient, efficient, and safe. As the cost of the alternatives continues to escalate, heating with wood is expected to become continually more attractive. "Wood heating will always remain a reliable form of heating in this area," Byle says. "People like it because it saves money. Wood is still a cheap fuel. People get more than just money saving from a wood stove. They like the radiant heat, which heats the objects in a room, rather than the air itself. There's also the aesthetic value, the look of the fire, which people like. It provides backup heating. And I think that there's something in us that likes a nice neat wood pile — part of it might be a sense of security in having our fuel stored for the winter. We feel self-sufficient. And there's probably something in us that likes to split wood and light fires." That may explain the enduring popularity of the wood stove. Technology continuously improves, yet the old-fashioned appeal remains. Since humans first tried to contain the heat of a fire, we've never lost that urge to draw near, and warm ourselves by the hearth.0 ,oyousgood wishes to aft) 51 PROGRESSIVE FARMING R.R. 2, Wellesley Rannoch 519-656-2709 519-229-6700 GRAIN STOVES INC.
