6 THE RURAL VOICE
Gisele Ireland
Christmas is something you experience
After several unsuccessful attempts
at producing this column, I wearily
trudged to the table to join the family
for supper and lamented about my
inability to put
on paper what I
wanted to say to
the special
readers about
Christmas.
They all
offered their
opinions why I
was failing but
the most
pertinent
comment was
that Christmas is
something you
experience, not
read about.
Gaddzucks, they were right. Here I
was, surrounded by Christmas
experts, and didn't consult them.
Children are the pros when it comes
to enjoying the Holiday season. My
children soon clued me in why it's
the most memorable time of the year.
Parents slacken off on the
disciplined routine. Evidently there
were times we just left the dishes on
the table, packed into the car, and
simply toured the villages and towns
around us just to see the light
displays. We always, according to
them, planned what we would do the
next year to our home with lights ...
and somehow never did.
They enjoyed the visiting with
friends and neighbours where scant
attention was paid to the lateness of
the hour and whether or not they
would be tired for school the next
day. We allowed them to eat
whatever sugar -laden goodie came
their way and didn't remind them of
cavities in their teeth.
People smile more, they stated,
when December rolls around. They
open doors for each other, gather in
groups on the main street and don't
seem to be in as much of a rush to go
anywhere.
They also observed that people
seem to be more aware of the less
fortunate and the lonely, and what's
more important, actually do
something about it. They recalled
carolling with three pairs of mittens
on, delivering foodstuffs gathered at
our church and actually being able to
choose toys and wrap them for
someone other than themselves.
The Christmas concerts hold a
special place in their memories. No
one rebuked them for forgetting their
lines and no matter how badly they
flubbed their skits nor how off-key
they sang, no one ever seemed to
mind and praised them endlessly.
They chuckled when they recalled
how we tried to bribe them into
acceptable behaviour by threatening
to tell Santa not to bring them any
toys. It never happened, but parents
never seemed to learn and used the
line over and over again. They
enjoyed the greed of wanting
everything, seeing it all and eating
until their tummies rebelled.
They still enjoy the music from
the church steeples, the shopping
malls and coming from every store
and display. People leave doors
open, cars unlocked and more
important, their hearts open during
Christmas.
Looking at Christmas through the
eyes of a child is not that bizarre.
After all, we were all children once
and it's not hard to shave those years
off our age if it lightens our steps and
gladdens our hearts.
I've made my Christmas list with
a certain amount of greed and a great
deal of enthusiasm. Maybe someone
will give me that pony yet.
Have a Season of joy, filled with
all the best to you and yours from all
of us. The Spirit of Christmas
expects it; our children said so.0
