Board once again discussed the
recommendation and after a thorough
airing of views, voted to remove the
exemption of check -off for breeding
stock. The decision was not an abuse
of power and is not designed to take
money from producers. It was a
responsible decision made after
thorough consultation, to remove a
loophole through which drovers and
others were avoiding a legal require-
ment to submit checkoff. The change
was widely discussed in advance and
was the subject of at least two Re-
ports from the Chair in Ontario Sheep
News. The check -off paid by Mr.
Walker on his flock was $1.00 per
head if sold privately, directly to
another producer or at a breed sale,
and 1.5 per cent of sale value if they
were sold at a sale barn.
Mr. Walker is incorrect in his
assertion that a large percentage of
lambs produced in the province make
poor carcasses. Witness Ontario
producers taking 1st and 2nd place in
the National Carcass Competition this
year. Hundreds of producers who
produce top carcasses for the freezer
trade or butcher shop contracts will
be insulted by his remarks. The
reality is that there has been steady
improvement in the quality of
Ontario carcasses due at least in part
to the educational program of OSMA.
The Agency does represent the
industry in Ontario. It represented
producers in discussions to establish
the Livestock Industry Trust Fund.
OSMA representatives work on our
behalf on the Canadian Sheep Fede-
ration, National Tripartite Stabiliza-
tion Committee, ROP Advisory
Board, Ontario Livestock Research
Sub -committee, Canadian Sheep
Breeders Association and Ontario
Federation of Agriculture. Dozens of
other organizations from the Ontario
Wine Council to Elementary School
Teachers Federation to OLAMA
contact the office daily because they
recognize that OSMA represents the
lamb producers of Ontario. Lamb
producers in other provinces have
expressed envy of our organization
and its accomplishments and fail to
understand why there is not total sup-
port for it among Ontario producers.
OSMA has enjoyed cordial rela-
