Answering questions
This is a response from the
Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency to
the letter by Robert C. Walker, a
former sheep producer.
Dear Mr. Walker:
The producers who sit on the
Board of Directors of the Ontario
Sheep Marketing Agency are elected
by the producers in each of 11
districts and are charged with the
responsibility of representing the
views of the producers in their
districts and formulating policy to
"encourage, promote and represent"
the industry in the province as well as
to "improve the marketing of sheep,
lamb and wool through producer
education, promotional campaigns,
consumer awareness and public
education, and awareness."
Each of these producer represen-
tatives take their responsibilities very
seriously. In 1992, the Board struck
an Ad Hoc Committee to study the
way the Agency was financed. This
was the first study since the forma-
tion of OSMA in 1985. The Ad Hoc
Committee included board members,
larger producers who sold direct,
producers who sold primarily via the
freezer trade, purebred breeders and
specialty wool producers. Among
the recommendations that this com-
mittee made to the board was the
removal of the check -off exemption
on breeding stock and farm gate sales
of sheep sold live directly to a
consumer. The recommendations
were accepted for discussion and
after much consideration the issue of
check -off for breeding stock was
turned back to the committee for
further study and the directors were
to consult with their constituents.
The proposals were presented to
the 1992 Annual General Meeting
and generated much discussion. The
